Within engineering, there are several areas where I have a great deal of experience. Here is a short description of some of them.

 

Product Design / Design Engineering

I see this area as the meeting point of all the disciplines that are involved in the product development. Here is where is critical to understand the balance between all elements and requirements of the product and find the best embodiment that will deliver the ideal product.

Most of the work concentrates around a CAD package. I use primarily Solidworks, Fusion 360, but have also experience in other packages such as Creo and Inventor. It is vital to have a good use of CAD to be able to create models in a time efficient manner which are robust, easy to handle, fast to share and adaptable.


System Engineering

In my opinion, this is very similar to a project manager or team leader. Most of the skills and tools are covered on the project management section.

System engineering requires a good understanding of all the stakeholders, the project objectives, regulations, product requirements and the technical challenges. Most of my work centres on this field, where I mange multidisciplinary teams to develop products with complex systems.

A critical aspect of systems engineering is to know how to prioritize tasks, how to give clear instruction to the team and how to ensure that the deliverables are adequate for the product. Different tools can be use on this area, but common sense, experience, leadership and sound technical knowledge are the best options.


Mechanical Engineering

This field covers all the details that are required to deliver the functional aspects of the product. It covers a great deal of sub disciplines that are required on all product developments, especially in complex systems.

My approach to Engineering is to first understand the challenge from a fist principles perspective to then find innovative solutions to complex problems by using a combination of an analytical, heuristic and iterative process. In this area I combine the use of calculations and simulations using software such as FEA and CFD. Always followed by prototyping and testing.

Simulations FEA and CFD

Computer simulations is a common tool used in product development that should be used when possible. There are several areas where simulation are particularly useful; Stress Analysis, Thermal Analysis and Fluids.

                       

In Stress Analysis we are looking to find the perfect geometry that will use the less material possible in a way that is manufacturable and that will perform mechanically as required. Aspects that we look here are impact tests, drop tests, deformation under certain forces and pressures. The tool that we use is Finite Element Analysis. Where a CAD model is analysed and optimized under a range of conditions. The results are then evaluated and tested on prototypes to corroborate the accuracy.

Another area is thermal and fluid analysis, usually covered by Multiphysics simulations programs or CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) in this case, we simulate thermal performance or how fluids will behave within the product. This is useful from the development of a hairdryer to an asthma inhaler.

My experience using this tool allows me to know when is best to use them and how to use them efficiently to find the answers and solution that are sought in a fast and cost effective process
